Marching Band Show Design FAQ
How is marching band show design pricing determined?
As you have seen on my site, I do not use a preset amount to determine the cost of my marching band show design services. I feel a band wanting a simple 25 page show shouldn’t have to pay the same amount as band that wants a 90 page, highly-integrated show. That’s why I go by a case-by-case basis. This allows me to keep my cost low and allows for any band, on any budget, to afford a custom marching band drill design.
I can give you an estimate by following the instructions on the pricing page or feel free to call me, and we can discus in detail what your needs are. Together, we can come to a price that works for your program.
What advantage is there to custom-written marching band show design?
I’m an “adaptable” drill designer for The Marching Warehouse and as a result, I can tell you accurately what the difference is. Adaptable marching band show design is written for a preset amount of members and designed so that a director can adapt numbers in the drill. This is great for the director that wants a show with minimal amount of time and planning on the design side, and wants a show that will “just work.”
My work as a custom show designer provides several advantages over adaptable marching band drill designs. The most obvious is that custom drill fits your band’s numbers precisely, and it allows for “specialty” sections like Dance Lines and Majorettes. In return, this will save time in the teaching process; namely, you will never spend time adapting drill.
I will tailor to your bands exact needs regarding demand, length of phrase, staging, integration and step-size. Have a mellophone section of all Freshmen? I can write with that in mind. Do you have balance issues because you don’t have enough low brass? I can stage your drill in a way to “cover up” that issue. Want props? You will need a custom marching band show design.
As you can see, there are several reasons why it is to your advantage to hire a drill designer.
I have a limited size practice space, can you write for that?
Yes I can, and as a matter of fact, I’ve done it on many occasions. This is yet another advantage of hiring a custom marching band show designer.
What do you need from me before you start?
I need a numerical breakdown of your band by sections, scores and recording of the music.
How soon do you need materials to begin writing?
The sooner the better. As soon as I get your numbers and a musical score, I will start on your marching band show design
How long does it take to write a marching band drill?
My average turn around time is 14 days, average-difficulty show for an average size band. For later July through early August, I will need 3 weeks to complete your complete show.
Some directors like their drill given in chunks; for instance, they want only their opener done for their band camp. I can work this way too and set up a time line that we will agree on before I start writing.
I have many specific drill requests. Can you customize the show to meet them?
Absolutely. This is another advantage of having a marching band show design tailored for your needs: custom drill designed for you, for your band.
What is included with the price of your designs?
My marching band drill designs include: pdf files of your drill (directors and student view), coordinate charts (student and a master set) and an animation of your show complete with music*. (with provided music)
Have bands that used your designs won awards and contest?
Yes, from Best in Class to Most Entertaining to High Visual to Best in Show. This includes wins over BOA Grand National Semifinalist in visual, effect and overall score. You might not heard of some of the groups I wrote for, but I’ve had success with them.
Consultation and instruction services:
What is included with consultation?
Consultation is determined on a case-by-case basis and is determined into consultation price. I can go as far as working with an arranger and guard designer that I know to come up with a complete package (musically and visually) for a competitive show. Also, I can do something as simple as watching recordings and discussing options to improve you band on a week to week basis. Consultation services will help you even further the quality of your marching band show design.
Are you available for band camp instruction?
I have chosen to no longer “instruct” on a day to day basis. I can come in for a day or two and give a fundamentals clinic. Furthermore, I can work with you and your staff on implementing a new technique program or improving an existing program.
Please note: I will only teach a “straight leg” style and technique program. The program is built on a solid foundation that is design to eliminate “grey areas” that confuse members and uses exercises that provided benefit for such program .
How successful have programs been under you instruction?
I’ve instructed bands that have won numerous awards including high visual. I even had a group of 25 wind players that defeated a 215 piece BOA Grand National Semi-Finalist and won their class in visual by 24 points. In 10 years as an instructor, the bands I instructed full time only lost the visual caption in their class once!!! And that was a split judgement.
